As the temperatures rise and the days grow longer, many pet owners eagerly anticipate outdoor adventures with their dogs. Unfortunately, spring also ushers in an unwelcome invasion of fleas and ticks. Everyone wants to avoid fleas and ticks. These pests can cause discomfort and pose health risks to our furry friends. Thankfully, there are natural strategies to keep these pesky parasites at bay without resorting to harsh chemicals. In this post, we will look at practical, nature-friendly methods that can keep your pup flea and tick-free this spring.
Understanding Fleas and Ticks
Before we get started, let's take a closer look at fleas and ticks. Fleas are tiny, wingless insects that feed on the blood of pets. On the other hand, ticks are arachnids that latch onto your dog's skin and can spread serious diseases, such as Lyme disease and Rocky Mountain spotted fever. In fact, studies show that over 30% of dogs in certain regions may contract Lyme disease from tick bites if not properly protected. By taking preventive measures, you can help keep your dog healthy and stop infestations before they start.
Beneficial Nematodes
The first place to start the fight is outside on the ground. Beneficial nematodes are microscopic worms that naturally live in soil, bark and ground litter.
They travel through soil and penetrate flea and tick larvae.
By releasing bacteria that kill the larvae, they end the flea or tick life cycle.
They kill before fleas grow up to bite – unlike products that target adult fleas.
They’re the only way to proactively deal with fleas introduced by feral animals.
They’re safe for people, pets and plants.
But they’re also harmless to beneficial insects such as ladybugs, lacewings and praying mantis, as well as earthworms.
These products can typically be applied once a year, in the spring once it's warm enough.
Essential Oils: Nature’s Flea and Tick Repellents
One of the most effective natural methods for repelling fleas and ticks is using essential oils. Lavender, peppermint, citronella, lemongrass and eucalyptus are particularly effective. Allow your dog to sniff the oil before mixing to ensure they like it, then spray it on their legs and underside before hiking or going off-property."

To make a pest-repelling spray, combine 5 to 10 drops of your chosen essential oil with 2 tablespoons of carrier oil (such as coconut or almond oil) in a spray bottle filled with 2 cups of water. Performing a patch test on your dog's skin is essential to check for allergies before applying it to their coat and your home.
Garlic: A Flavorful Defense against Pests
Garlic may be a common ingredient in your kitchen, but it also serves as a powerful ally in fighting off parasites. Adding small amounts of freshly chopped garlic to their diet can create an uninviting atmosphere for fleas and ticks.
A guideline is to start by chopping the garlic and let it sit for at least 10 minutes before using. This allows the beneficial compound allicin to fully develop maximizing its health benefits.
dogs up to 5 lbs: 1/6 tsp
dogs up to 10 lbs: 1/3 tsp
dogs up to 15 lbs: 1/2 tsp
dogs up to 20 lbs: 2/3 tsp
dogs 30 lbs or more: 1 tsp
This can be applied to their food several times a week.
If your dog is pregnant, a puppy or on any medications, please consult your vet.
Pumpkin Seeds: The Natural Dewormer
Did you know that pumpkin seeds can also help fight internal parasites? These seeds contain cucurbitacin, a natural compound that can paralyze worms. To add pumpkin seeds to your dog's diet, buy organic, raw pumpkins seeds and grind in a spice or coffee grinder. Add 1/2 a teaspoon per 20 lbs of dog. As an added bonus, pumpkin seeds provide potassium, copper, manganese, and iron and vitamins A, C & E along with fiber.
Natural Flea and Tick Tags
To offer continuous protection try a bio magnetic tags. I have used several versions of these with great success. These tags attach to your dogs collar and need to be worn all the time. So if your dog does not wear a collar this is not for you.
But how do they work? The electromagnetic field interacts with the natural electromagnetic waves from the heart, and is a key element in generating scalar waves that repel parasites such as fleas and ticks. Scalar waves create a bio resonant field that is used in treatment of a variety of medical conditions. ‘Scalar medicine’ is now widely recognized in the profession as a form of holistic, non-invasive therapy.
Regular Grooming: A Simple Routine
Regular grooming is crucial for maintaining a flea and tick-free environment. Not only does bathing your dog remove dirt, but it also makes it easier to detect any unwelcome pests.
Brushing your dog's coat frequently can also help catch fleas and ticks and promote a healthier coat.
Keeping Your Environment Pest-Free
It is important to remember that your dog is not the only focus in the battle against fleas and ticks; your living environment plays a significant role too. Regularly vacuuming carpets, rugs, and furniture can greatly diminish the chances of a flea infestation, as this can remove flea eggs and larvae.
You can also benefit from using human grade diatomaceous earth in your yard and on your carpets. This natural powder, made from fossilized algae, can help eliminate fleas and other pests while being completely safe for your pet. Sprinkle it in areas where your dog often spends time to maximize its effectiveness.
